BMW's 2026 Electric Lineup Compared: i4 vs. i5 vs. i7 vs. iX — Every Trim Explained
Every 2026 BMW EV trim compared — i4, i5, i7, and iX prices, EPA range, and 0-60 times, plus the value pick in each lineup and the trims worth skipping.
BMW now sells four distinct electric vehicles in the United States: the i4 Gran Coupe, the i5 sedan, the i7 flagship, and the iX SUV. Between them there are twelve trims, spanning roughly $58,000 to $169,000 before destination, with EPA ranges from 232 miles to 364 miles. For 2026, BMW quietly made this lineup better: the i4 and i5 picked up more efficient silicon-carbide inverters and longer EPA ranges, the i4 M50 became the more powerful M60, and the heavily refreshed iX got a cheaper entry trim and a genuine 364-mile range option.
One thing to get out of the way first: the federal EV purchase tax credit ended on September 30, 2025, and none of these vehicles came close to qualifying anyway due to price and assembly rules. BMW i4: The Entry Point, and Still the Efficiency Champ
The i4 Gran Coupe is BMW's most affordable EV and its best-seller. It rides on a shared gas/electric platform rather than a dedicated EV architecture, which costs it some interior packaging efficiency, but the payoff is that it drives like a 3 Series — because underneath, it largely is one. All three trims use an approximately 84-kWh battery pack that DC fast-charges at up to 200 kW (BMW), good for a 10–80% charge in a bit over half an hour under favorable conditions.
i4 eDrive40 — $57,900
One rear motor, 335 hp, and for 2026, a meaningful efficiency bump: new silicon-carbide inverter components push the EPA rating to 333 miles on the standard 18-inch wheels and 307 miles on 19s (BMW). That makes the cheapest i4 the longest-range vehicle in this entire four-model comparison except for the iX xDrive60 — a $30,000-cheaper car. A 5.5-second 0–60 is quick enough for almost anyone.
i4 xDrive40 — $62,300
Adds a front motor for 396 hp total and a 4.9-second 0–60 (BMW), but range falls to 268–287 miles (EPA). You're paying $4,400 for all-wheel drive and giving up as much as 46 miles of range in exchange. If you live somewhere with real winters, that trade can be worth it; a set of winter tires on the eDrive40 covers most of the same ground for less.
i4 M60 — $70,700
The former M50 gains a new name and a big power bump for 2026: 510 hp in normal driving, 593 hp in Sport Boost, and 0–60 in 3.6 seconds (BMW). Range is the casualty — 278 miles on 19-inch wheels, and just 232 miles on the optional 20s (EPA). It's genuinely fast and still the enthusiast's pick, but spec it carefully: the wheel choice alone swings range by 46 miles.
Value pick: the eDrive40, and it isn't close. It has the most range, the lowest price, and 90% of the driving experience. Skip: the xDrive40, unless AWD is non-negotiable — it's the middle child with the weakest range-per-dollar case.
BMW i5: More Space, More Tech, More Money
The i5 is the electric 5 Series — a size class up from the i4, built on the same flexible platform philosophy but with a more modern cabin, available Highway Assistant hands-free driving, and a usable 84.3-kWh battery charging at up to 205 kW. For 2026, it got the same silicon-carbide inverter treatment as the i4, lifting the eDrive40's EPA rating from 295 to 310 miles on 19-inch wheels (Car and Driver).
i5 eDrive40 — $67,100
Same 335-hp rear-motor formula as the i4 eDrive40, in a larger and heavier body, so 0–60 stretches to about 5.7 seconds. EPA range is 310 miles on 19s, roughly 300 on 20s, and 278 on 21s. This is the rational i5: it undercuts a comparably equipped Mercedes EQE and delivers the range most buyers actually need.
i5 xDrive40 — $70,100
389 hp, all-wheel drive, roughly 5.2 seconds to 60, and 256–295 miles of EPA range depending on wheels. At only $3,000 over the eDrive40, this is a more defensible AWD upcharge than the i4's, and it's the trim most i5 shoppers in snowy states should land on.
i5 M60 — $84,100
590 hp, 3.7 seconds to 60 (BMW), and 240–277 miles of range (EPA). It's the performance flagship, but it's also $14,000 over the xDrive40, and the standard i5 chassis is already composed. Unless you specifically want the M-tuned suspension and the theater, the money is better spent on options — or banked.
Value pick: eDrive40 for mild climates, xDrive40 for everyone else. Skip: the M60 for most buyers — it's quick, but the i4 M60 delivers nearly identical acceleration for $13,400 less.
BMW i7: The Flagship, Priced Like One
The i7 is the electric 7 Series, sharing its body, cabin, and outrageous options list (the 31-inch rear Theater Screen among them) with the gas car. All three trims use a 105.6-kWh (net) battery pack with DC charging at up to 195 kW. Ranges are solid rather than spectacular for the money — this is a 6,000-pound luxury liner, not an efficiency play.
i7 eDrive50 — $105,700
The rear-drive entry, 449 hp, 0–60 in 5.3 seconds, and the best range of the three at 301–314 miles (EPA). It comes generously equipped — leather, ventilated front seats, Bowers & Wilkins audio — and unless you demand AWD or maximum thrust, it's the sensible way into an i7, if "sensible" applies at six figures.
i7 xDrive60 — $124,200
536 hp, all-wheel drive, 4.5 seconds to 60, and 296–311 miles of range (EPA). It gives up almost nothing in range to the eDrive50, but costs $18,500 more. That premium buys AWD and pace; the equipment gap is smaller than the price gap suggests.
i7 M70 — $168,500
650 hp and 0–60 in about 3.5 seconds (BMW), with range dipping to 267–285 miles (EPA). A physics flex more than a rational purchase; at nearly $63,000 over the eDrive50, it exists for buyers who don't read comparison tables.
Value pick: eDrive50 — most range, lowest price, same cabin. Skip: the M70 unless money genuinely isn't a variable.
BMW iX: The SUV, Refreshed and Recharged
The iX got the most significant 2026 update of the group: a mid-cycle refresh with new trim names, more power across the board, longer ranges, and — unusually — a lower starting price. The old xDrive50 gave way to a cheaper xDrive45 entry and a stronger xDrive60 mid-trim, while the M70 replaced the M60 at the top (Car and Driver). Unlike the sedans, the iX rides on a dedicated EV architecture with a carbon-fiber-reinforced cage, and it remains the roomiest, most comfortable way to go electric in BMW's showroom.
iX xDrive45 — $74,975
New for 2026, with 402 hp from dual motors, a 100.1-kWh battery, 0–60 in 4.9 seconds, and up to 312 miles of range (BMW/EPA). It starts thousands below the old xDrive50 while delivering more standard power. DC charging peaks around 175 kW — adequate, not class-leading.
iX xDrive60 — $88,325
The sweet spot of the entire BMW EV lineup: 536 hp, a bigger 113.4-kWh battery, 0–60 in 4.4 seconds, and up to 364 miles of EPA range — the longest of any BMW currently on sale in the US. If your budget reaches it and you drive long distances, this is the trim that makes road trips a non-event.
iX M70 — $111,325
650 hp, 3.6 seconds to 60, and up to 302 miles of range (EPA). Enormously fast for a 5,700-pound SUV, but you pay $23,000 over the xDrive60 and give up range doing it.
Value pick: xDrive60 if the budget allows; xDrive45 if it doesn't. Skip: the M70 — the xDrive60 is already quicker than any SUV needs to be.

i4 vs. i5: the sedan question
The honest answer is that the i4 eDrive40 is the best value in BMW's entire electric range. It out-ranges the equivalent i5 by more than 20 miles, costs $9,200 less, and drives with more agility because it's smaller and lighter. Choose the i5 if you need real rear-seat space, want the newer cabin tech and hands-free Highway Assistant, or simply prefer the presence of a mid-size sedan. SUV buyers: the iX, for now
The iX is BMW's only electric SUV on sale today, so the decision is really about trim — and about timing. The Neue Klasse iX3, with an 800-volt platform, up to 434 miles of EPA range, and a $61,500 starting price, begins US deliveries in late September 2026 (BMW). If you don't need three rows or the iX's size, and you can wait a few months, the iX3 will out-charge and out-range every vehicle in this article for xDrive45 money or less. The i7: for a specific buyer
Nobody cross-shops an i7 against an i4. If you're here, you want a flagship; the only advice that matters is that the eDrive50 carries the same cabin and the best range for $63,000 less than the M70.
Charging: The Lineup's Quiet Weakness
Every current BMW EV uses a 400-volt architecture with peak DC rates between roughly 175 and 205 kW. That's competitive with Mercedes and Tesla's mainstream models, but well behind the 800-volt systems in the Audi Q6 e-tron, Porsche Macan Electric, and Hyundai/Kia's E-GMP cars — and behind BMW's own incoming Neue Klasse models. BMW's 2026 EV lineup rewards buyers who resist the urge to climb the trim ladder. The i4 eDrive40 is the best value, the iX xDrive60 has the most range, the i5 xDrive40 is the smart all-weather sedan, and the i7 eDrive50 is the only flagship trim that makes financial sense. The M-badged trims are fast and charismatic, but every one of them costs meaningful range as well as money.
